Dartmouth College. Theological and Missionary Society

Biography

The Theological Society was founded 1808, with the intention of members following a Christian life and sharing that life with others in the face of the infidelity it believed colleges encouraged. By 1821, it had grown large enough to support a missionary branch called the Society of Inquiry.

All members of the Society of Inquiry came from the Theological Society, and pursued contact with missionaries. The two organizations functioned separately until 1869, when they united under the name of the Theological and Missionary Society, engaging with religion through writing and debate. The Theological and Missionary Society went through several subsequent name changes, including the Christian Fraternity, YMCA of Dartmouth, and the Dartmouth Christian Association.
