Biography
Jim Yong Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea on December 8, 1959. He attended the University of Iowa and Brown University, where he graduated with a B.A. in 1982. He earned an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1991, and a PhD in anthropology at Harvard University in 1993.
Kim joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School in 1993 and later served as chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine and eventually as chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women's Hospital He was also a co-founder of Partners in Health and held several positions with the World Health Organization.
In 2009, Kim became the 17th President of Dartmouth College and was the first Asian American president of an Ivy League institution. Kim’s administration was the second shortest in Dartmouth’s history after Daniel Dana’s, which was curtailed due to Dana’s health.
During his presidency, Kim helped secure a $35 million grant to establish the Dartmouth Center for Health Care Delivery Science. He also worked to address sexual violence on campus, spurring an initiative to educate students on the importance of bystander intervention in sexual assault as part of a larger Sexual Assault Awareness Program. Ultimately, Kim came in for significant criticism from students who were disappointed, in part, by his lack of transparency, particularly regarding the handling of budget cuts implemented during the economic downturn in 2009.
In 2012, Kim left Dartmouth after three years to take the position of President of the World Bank a position he held until 2019.
