Dartmouth College. Athletic Department
Biography
In 1893, the Alumni Association Committee on Athletics was formed. In 1892, the Trustees had approved a proposal by the Alumni Association in 1891 to turn over control of College athletics to them. Dr. Edward Cowles (’59) served as its first President until 1899. A Constitution was drafted in 1896 describing the Committee as a nine-member group consisting of three alumni, three faculty, and the student members of the football, baseball, and track athletic groups. The Athletic Committee became the Dartmouth College Athletic Council in 1899 under a revision to the Constitution. President William J. Tucker appointed Irving Joseph French (’01) as Graduate Manager of the Athletic Council in 1901, making him its first executive officer. In 1921, the Trustees voted to give the Athletic Council control over maintenance and supervision of the athletic field and tennis courts, and in 1926, they voted to create the offices of Athletic Supervisor and Business Manager of Athletics. Harry Robert “Rip” Heneage (’07) served as the first Supervisor of Athletics from 1927 to 1936. Jurisdiction over the financial and operating aspects of athletics (except for winter sports controlled by the Dartmouth Outing Club) were also turned over to the Athletic Council the following year, making the Supervisor of Athletics the executive officer. In 1937, the Supervisor position was renamed Athletic Director, and William Hill McCarter was the first to hold the title, serving until 1954. Around 1990, the Dartmouth College Athletic Department was born from the Athletic Council and assumed responsibility of administration of athletics. Currently, the Athletic Council serves in an advisory role to the Athletic Director and the Dean of the College, and consists of four members of the College Administration, four members of the Alumni Council, two faculty members, and four undergraduate students.
