Biography

The Department of Education was founded in 1900 so that interested Dartmouth students could be certified to teach in public secondary schools. The department remained extremely small until the 1960’s, at which time it added the personnel and the courses necessary to achieve certification at the primary school level, as well as to offer new courses in education studies.The first instructor was Herman Harrell Horne.
