Dartmouth College. Department of Studio Art
Biography
Instruction in art history began at Dartmouth in 1894, under Professor Arthur Hardy, within the Department of Art Department and Archaeology. The department carried that name until 1957. A few courses in studio art appear within the offerings of the department as well as extracurricular studio space being available for students wishing to pursue drawing and painting. Visual Studies courses appear as a separate section within the Art Department's offerings in 1962. An Art major with an emphasis in Visual Studies was available starting in 1966; a major in Visual Studies within the Art Department was available starting in 1969. Visual Studies first appears as its own department in the 1984 course catalog, and changed its name to Studio Art in 1990.
