Biography
The National Ski Patrol (NSP) was founded in 1938 by Charles Minot Dole with the assistance of Roger Langley, the president of the National Ski Association. Since then, the NSP has grown and spread across the nation, today comprising over 26,000 members and over 600 patrols. The NSP endeavors to promote safety programs and improve the safety and enjoyment of skiers and snowboarders across the country. It has also worked with other countries to promote emergency outdoor care information, and has established patrol associations in Canada, Korea, New Zealand, Israel, Turkey, Argentina, Chile, and Australia. In 1980, the NSP was recognized by a charter from the United States Congress, and now makes an annual report to Congress. The documents in the collection pertain to the Eastern Division of the NSP, which includes Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and parts of Pennsylvania and Appalachia.
