Dartmouth Savings Bank

Biography

The Dartmouth Savings Bank was founded in 1860, its first president being Daniel Blaisdell, at that time the treasurer of Dartmouth College, and who would become president of the Dartmouth National Bank as well, upon its incorporation in 1865. The presidencies of the two banks were shared through 1899, and from 1870 until 1914, both occupied a building on North Main Streets, now the site of Robinson Hall. In 1914, the banks moved into new shared quarters on the corner of South Main and Lebanon Street. In 1976, Dartmouth National Bank moved to another location.

Until ca. 1970, the Dartmouth Savings Bank was solely a retail bank, handling just savings and mortgage accounts. In 1980, its deposits peaked at $125 million. For the next few years, the bank saw its assets declining due to a number of factors, including the loss of depositors to higher paying money market accounts elsewhere, and the interest rates it was paying out on saving accounts exceeding interest income from long held mortgages.

In 1983, Dartmouth Savings Bank merged with The Savers' Bank, of Littleton, NH, the latter becoming the controlling corporation.
