Dartmouth College. Dartmouth Christian Association
Biography
The Dartmouth Christian Association (D.C.A.) followed in a long tradition of similar organizations that began with the Theological Society in 1808 and the Society of Inquiry in 1821, which together became the Theological and Missionary Society in 1869. The Society changed it’s name to the Christian Fraternity in 1875, and then became the YMCA in 1882 when it joined the national Association. In 1905, the name Dartmouth Christian Association was adopted.
The D.C.A. coordinated a variety of roles and activities consistent with its mission to develop good character in all of its members and to uphold the values of Christianity in daily life. Amongst its activities were an employment bureau, Bible study, lectures, deputation work, a lost and found bureau, and the creation of a freshman handbook. The D.C.A. strongly encouraged faith and service in the Christian tradition, calling members to examine their own creed and influence others to do the same.
