Biography

Charles Greely Loring (1794-1867) was born in Boston on 2 May 1794. He graduated from Harvard College in 1812, then studied at Litchfield Law School in Connecticut and was admitted to the Bar in 1815. He specialized in marine insurance and real estate and argued several times before the U.S. Supreme Court. He was offered twice replace Webster in the U.S. Senate,in 1849 and in 1853, declining both times. He represented Suffolk County in the Mass. Senate in 1862, serving as chair of the Judiciary Committee and the Committee on Mercantile Affairs, and was the author of numerous newspaper articles and political pamphlets.
