Biography

Abbott Lawrence (December 16, 1792, Groton, Massachusetts – August 18, 1855) was a prominent American businessman, politician, and philanthropist. He was among the group of industrialists that founded a settlement on the Merrimack River that would later be named for him, Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Letters from Abbott Lawrence in London to George Ticknor in Boston, telling him that he has been quite ill, boredom has not set in. Mentions the spirit of reform in Britain, a possible settlement of difficulties between US and Great Britain, European affairs, as well as the slavery question in the US. Also thanks him for books, refers to an exhibition and news of friends and tells him that Webster will be a good secretary.
