Hovey, Richard, 1864-1900

 

Biography

Richard Hovey was born on May 4, 1864, in Normal, Illinois. He graduated from Dartmouth College, where he was the class poet, in 1885. Hovey published his first book of poems in 1880, and collaborated with Bliss Carmon on three volumes of "tramp" verse (1894-1900). In 1894, Hovey wrote "Men of Dartmouth" which became the school's Alma Mater. In 1888, he became a lecturer at Columbia University and Professor of English at Barnard College. Hovey died on February 24, 1900.
