Biography

Frederick M. Edgell enlisted at about 17 years old during the Mexican War period (1846-48) as a Private in Captain Weightman's Company A, Missouri Light Artillery Battalion. The battery served in Kansas, New Mexico, and Louisiana, and he mustered out with them in New Orleans in June 1847. By 1860 he was a tinsmith in Manchester, NH. In 1861, by then age 32, he helped raise the First Independent Battery, New Hampshire Light Artillery. He was commissioned its First Lieutenant on 16 August 1861.He was promoted to Captain of the Battery on 8 March 1863. He was commissioned Major of the First New Hampshire Heavy Artillery on 10 November 1864.
