Biography
Henry Wardwell was born in Ipswich, Mass., April 28, 1840.During his time at Dartmouth College, he had a brief army service, enlisting July 16, 1864, in Company C, Fifth Massachusetts Volunteers. After seeing active service at Baltimore, Fort McHenry, Monocacy Junction, and Harper's Ferry, he was mustered out November 16, 1864, and returned to college from which he graduated in 1866. For three years after graduation he was principal of a grammar school in Dorchester, Mass. He meanwhile studied law, and continued the study in a Boston office in 1869-70, being admitted to the bar in 1870. He practiced in Boston until 1890.In 1890 he moved to Salem, keeping his office in Boston. Here he was a member of the Common Council in 1890 and an alderman in 1891. In September, 1896, he was appointed a justice of the Superior Court of the state, but resigned in 1898 because of healh reasons.
