Biography

Charles D. Hamel was a tax attorney in Washington, D.C. and was first Chairman of the U.S. Board of Tax Appeals. He was a classmate and roommate of explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson at the University of North Dakota and later served as an advisor and confident to Stefansson on financial and legal matters.

Charles D. Hamel. Tax attorney. The collection consists of correspondence with Viljalmur Stefansson, and others concerning Stefansson's financial affairs, student days at the University of North Dakota, and the transfer of the Stefansson Library from New York to Dartmouth College. Also included is a scrapbook concerning Hamel's professional life.
