Biography

Margaret Oldenburg was born June 27, 1892 in Carlton, Minnesota. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College in 1915 and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Minnesota in Education (1921) and Library Science (1929). After teaching at several Minnesota high schools (1918-1928), Oldenburg accepted a position as a cataloger with the University of Minnesota Libraries in 1929. She resigned from her position in 1939 and relocated to Grand Marais, Minnesota. From the late 1930s to the mid-1950s, Oldenburg undertook several expeditions to the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and numerous destinations along the Arctic coastline. She collaborated with the University of Minnesota’s Department of Botany collecting botanical specimens during her expeditions and donating them to the department. Margaret Oldenburg died August 21, 1972 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Consist of letters to Margaret Oldenburg from people in the Northwest Territories, including personnel of the Hudson's Bay Company and various stations of the Canadian government. Collection includes photographs of various towns located in the Canadian Arctic.
