Biography
Ezra Cornell (January 11, 1807 – December 9, 1874) was an American businessman, politician, academic, and philanthropist. He was the founder of Western Union and a co-founder of Cornell University. He also served as President of the New York Agriculture Society and as a New York State Senator.

Three-page letter from Ezra Cornell in Ithaca, New York to Mrs. A.C. French, answering her appeal for aid to McKendree College. Says he wishes to concentrate his efforts and feels that there are too many colleges already with high ideals and little or nothing on which to operate. Proposes to found a university in New York.
