Biography

Elinor Guthrie McVickar was born in 1902 in New Orleans. She was educated in Switzerland and at Sweet Briar College. McVickar began her career in New York as the debutante editor of "Harper's Bazar," where she worked from 1926-1934. She returned to the fashion magazine twice, from 1935-1944 and again from 1962 to 1969, both times as beauty editor. When she was not working for "Harper's Bazar," McVickar was the public relations director at Saks Fifth Avenue. She was also the first editor of "Modern Bride" magazine. McVickar was the stepdaughter of Arctic explorer David L. Brainard. She died in 1982.
