Biography
George Eckersall was born in 1782 at Burford, near Dorking, Surrey, in England. He enrolled at Westminster School in 1795, and entered St. Peter's College, Westminster, in 1797. After a brief stint at Jesus College, Cambridge, he entered the British army as an ensign of the 4th Foot in 1803. He became a lieutenant the following year, then retired from service in 1805. He lived at the lodge in St. Catherine's, near Bath, in England. The political economist Thomas Malthus was his brother-in-law.

Travel journal, diary, and sketchbook of George Eckersall of St. Catherine, near Bath, Somerset. Eckersall's journal documents, in part, the second half of his grand tour. He spent the months of January to May, 1827 in Italy, primarily in Rome, Naples, Florence, and Venice. Entries from June and July document his journey home through Austria, Switzerland, and France. Beginning in August, Eckersall described his time at home in St. Catherine and a trip to London in December. Diary entries...
