Biography

Thomas Flint, Jr., was born on May 29, 1858, in San Juan Bautista, near Hollister, California. After attending Golden Gate Academy in Oakland and receiving private tutoring, he enrolled at Dartmouth College. While at Dartmouth, he was a member of the secret society Psi Upsilon and participated in track and field (holding the records for fastest hundred-yard dash and best running high jump, and sharing the record for best standing high jump). He graduated in 1880 and became a foreman on his father's ranch in San Juan Bautista. After his father's death, Flint inherited the ranch. He continued ranching until 1923, when he sold the ranch and became a teller at the Hollister branch of the Bank of Italy, a position he held for two years before retiring. A lifelong Republican, Flint served in the California state senate from 1889 to 1905, holding the office of president pro tem of that body between 1895 and 1905. He was an active member of numerous civic organizations, serving as a Grand Master of the Free and and Accepted Masons, a Grand High Priest in the Royal Arch Masons, a Grand President of the Native Sons of the Golden West, and a Grand Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, among other positions. He died in 1936.

Notebook kept by Thomas Flint, Jr., Dartmouth Class of 1880. Contains notes on "The Methods of the Divine Government" by James McCosh, as well as notes on constitutional law and political economy. Also contains rules for pledging several senior societies at Dartmouth College, a chart of Indo-European languages, a description of a trip to Boston, and miscellaneous other notes.
