Biography
William DeWitt Hyde was born September 23, 1858 in Winchedon, Massachusetts. After attending Phillips Exeter Academy, he graduated from Harvard University in 1879. Hyde subsequently studied at Union Theological Seminary and Andover Theological Seminary, earning a degree from the latter in 1882. For the next three years he was minister at a Congregational church in Patterson, New Jersey. He married Prudence Phillips on November 6, 1883. In 1885, Hyde accepted the presidency of Bowdoin College, where he also held a professorship in mental and moral philosophy. In addition to publishing several books on philosophical and religious topics, he served as a trustee of Phillips Exeter from 1898 to 1917. Hyde was still Bowdoin's president when he died on June 29, 1917.
