Lucy Crawford and her cousin Ethan Allen Crawford were born in Guildhall, Vermont in the 1790s. Lucy and Ethan were married in 1811. They lived on Ethan’s family settlement in Crawford Notch, New Hampshire. They subsisted by hunting, trapping, and later on Ethan’s work as a guide. Ethan is purported to have cut the first trail up Mount Washington. Over time they expanded their homestead to become an inn and later a hotel for tourists.
