Biography

Wayne Edson Stevens was born on July 24, 1892 in Avon, Illinois. He received an AB degree from Knox College in 1913 and his M.A and Ph.D from the University of Illinois in 1914 and 1916 respectively. From 1916-1917, he was an instructor in history at the University of Minnesota. During World War I, Stevens served as a first lieutenant in the US Army. After the war he worked as a War Records Secretary at the Illinois State Historical Society and as a Historian of Air Service in the War Department. Stevens joined the faculty of the history department in 1921 where he remained for more than 30 years. Stevens is also the author of "The Northwest Fur Trade, 1763-1800," which was published in 1928. He died in 1959.
