Biography

Alfred Edward Newton was born in 1864. He was an author, publisher and book collector. He is best known for his book Amenities of Book Collecting (1918) which sold over 25,000 copies. At the time of his death, it was estimated that he had approximately 10,000 books in his collection, focusing on English and American literary works. Newton was a resident of Daylesford, Pennsylvania. He died 1940.

Abstract

A. Edward Newton (1864-1940), author. The collection contains correspondence, principally with Frederick B. Austin and Mabel Zahn, on literary matters and book-collection as well as the American political scene in the 1930's. A letter to Harold Rugg declining an invitation to speak is also included.
