Biography
Eden Phillpotts was born on November 4, 1862 in Mount Abu, Rajasthan. His father Henry was an officer in the Indian Army. In 1879, he left home and found a job in London as a clerk with the Sun Fire Office. He began writing in his spare time eventually leaving the insurance office for a part-time assistant editor position with the weekly "Black and White Magazine." He continued to write poetry, short stories, novels, plays and mystery tales. Many of his novels were about rural Devon life. Publications include "A Deal with the Devil" (1895), "The Good Read Earth" (1901), "The Torch and Other Tales" (1929), "The Secred Woman: A Play in Five Acts" (1915) and "My Devon Years" (1916). He died on December 29, 1960.
