Biography

Francis Ellsworth Merrill was born on May 21, 1904 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1926 and received his AM from the University of Chicago in 1934 and his PhD in Philosophy in 1937. Merrill was an educator and from 1946-1969 a professor of sociology at Dartmouth College. During World War II he was an intelligence officer with the Board Economics Warfare, Washington, DC. Merrill died in 1969.

Abstract

Francis E. Merrill (1904-1969), professor of sociology at Dartmouth College. Dartmouth College Class of 1926. The collection contains personal and professional correspondence, dissertations and typescripts of published and unpublished books including "Social Disorganization" and articles as well as course and lecture material.
