Biography

Sarah Orne Jewett was born of September 3, 1849 in South Berwick, Maine. Jewett was educated at Miss Olive Rayne's school and then at Berwick Academy, graduating in 1866. At age 19, Jewett published her first important story in the Atlantic Monthly, and her reputation grew throughout the 1870s and 1880s. In her writings, Jewett focused on local color rathern than on plot and is recognized as an important practitioner of American literary regionalism. She died on June 24, 1909.

Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909), writer. The collection contains letters to her cousin, Esther Sawyer Jackman, on personal matters letter to Bradford Torrey, acknowledging a book letter to Harold G. Rugg commenting on her book "The Tory Lover."
