Gumpert, Martin, 1897-1955

 

Biography

Martin Gumpert was born on November 12, 1897. He was a Jewish German-born American physician and writer. Gumpert moved to the United States in 1936. Gumpert provided the German author Thomas Mann with information about the course of the disease of syphilis. Mann used this information in writing his Faust novel. Other publications include "Hell in Paradise" (1939), "Heil Hunger!" (1940) and "The Anatomy of Happiness" (1951). Gumpert died on April 18, 1955.
