Biography

Karl August Bickel was born on January 20, 1882 in Geneseo, Illinois. He was a journalist and director and president of the United Press in the 1930s. While at the United Press, Bickel was instrumental in breaking into the European market and benefited from the development of radio. Bickel retired to Florida where he became one of the defenders of the region's ancestral customs, of which he wrote a story, in the book "The Mangrove Coast." He also became president of the Florida Historical Society. Bickel died on December 11, 1972.
