Short, Simeon, 1786-1877

 

Biography

Simeon Short was born on December 1, 1786 in Hartland, Vermont. He was admitted to Dartmouth College but stayed only through his sophomore year. He studied law with Judge Hubbard, of Windsor, and was admitted to the bar in 1814. He settled in Thetford, Vermont in 1815, representing Thetford in the legislature from 1828-1830 and in the state senate from 1838-1840. Short was a register of probate from 1824-1836 and in 1849, an assistant judge of the county court in 1838, and judge of probate in 1840. He was also a trustee of Thetford Academy for more than forty years. Short died on February 25, 1877.

Abstract

Simeon Short (1786-1877), lawyer and judge. Attended Dartmouth College. The collection contains correspondence concerning legal affairs and Thetford Academy business papers as well as legal documents associated with his legal practice and office as Justice of the Peace at Thetford, Vermont.
