Chandler, Abiel, 1777-1851

 

Biography

Abiel Chandler was born on February 26, 1777 in Concord, New Hampshire. He attended school at the Fryeburg Academy, and Phillips Exeter and graduated from Harvard University with an AB in 1806 and AM in 1809. After graduation he worked as a teacher in Salem and Newburyport, Massachusetts. In 1817, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland and ventured into the merchant business. He and Benjamin Howard formed the partnership of Chandler, Howard and Company in Boston in 1818 and stayed in business until 1845, acquiring a substantial fortune in the process. He retired to Walpole, New Hampshire where he died on March 22, 1851.
