Biography

George Bradley Barrows was born on December 12, 1822. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1842 after which he studied law with his father, but did not practice. He was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1859 and 1862 and the Maine Senate in 1863 to 1864, serving as its president in 1864. His brother John Stuart Barrows was born on July 26, 1824 and also graduated from Dartmouth College in 1842. John Stuart became a physician in Fryeburg, Maine. George Bradley died on January 29, 1904 and John Stuart died on February 2, 1849.

Abstract

George Bradley Barrows (1822-1904). Dartmouth College Class of 1842. The collection contains correspondence with his parents while a student at Dartmouth Collge. Includes descriptions of student rooms, academic courses, instructors, and student life. The collection also includes references to the United Fraternity and Social Friends libraries, the Dartmouth Phalanx, slavery and abolition, typhoid outbreaks, induction into Phi Beta Kappa, and the death of President Harrison.
