Biography
Alfred Billings Street was born on December 18, 1811 in Poughkeepsie, New York. He was educated at the Dutchess County Academy after which he studied law with his father and practiced in Monticello. In 1839, he moved to Albany and edited the "Northern Light" from 1843 to 1844. Street also wrote poetry that was published in literary magazines. In 1848, he was appointed New York State Librarian, a position he held until his death on June 2, 1881.
