John Foster was born in Warner, New Hampshire in 1852. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1876. In 1878, Foster was admitted to the New Hampshire Bar and opened a law practice in Manchester, NH. In 1879, he was elected to the state legislature where he served one term. In 1866, Foster's health began to fail and in 1890, he retired from his law practice. He died in 1914.

John Foster (1852-1914), attorney. Dartmouth College Class of 1876. The collection contains legal and personal correspondence, primarily relating to Foster's legal practice. Accounts, bills, depositions, and other legal documents as well as several speeches delivered in Manchester, NH are also included, as is a small quantity of correspondence with fellow Dartmouth College classmates.
