Biography
A native of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, James A. Spalding earned an A.B. from Dartmouth College in 1866, where he was a member of Alpha Delta Phi. He went on to receive an A.M. from the school (conferred in 1891, but earned in the 1860s) and studied medicine at Harvard Medical School, where he received his M.D. in 1870. Having lost his hearing, he traveled to Europe for two years to study the eye and the ear. He then made his career as an eye and ear specialist in Portland, Maine, where he had a private practice and also worked at the Maine General Hospital. An active member of the medical profession, Spalding authored many articles and addresses on his speciality, translated European medical works for an English-speaking audience, wrote medical biographies of Maine physicians, and authored works on his grandfather, Dartmouth professor Lyman Spaulding. He received an honorary Doctor of Letters from Dartmouth in 1928.
