Biography

Luther Stevens Oakes was born on April 15, 1877 in Jericho, Vermont. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1899 and completed the Thayer School course in 1900 after which he became an engineer and later general manager working for Winston Brothers in Minneapolis where he developed the great iron deposits in Northern Minnesota, built Diablo Dam, expended the firm's activities into Canada and South America and participated in defense and war projects. Oakes was also on the Board of Overseers of the Thayer School and on the Dartmouth Alumni Council (1934-1939). He died on February 25, 1955.

Abstract

Luther Steven Oakes (1877-1955), Dartmouth College Class of 1899 and Thayer Class of 1900. The collection contains student papers, personal accounts, freehand and mechanical drawing albums, notes and notebooks and photograph albums containing Dartmouth photographs. A letter of recommendation from Robert Fletcher is also included.
