Biography

Richmond Alexander Lattimore was born on May 6, 1906 in Paotingfu, China. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1926.Richmond was a Rhodes Scholar at Christ Church, Oxford, and received his B.A. in 1932, then received a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1934. He joined the Department of Greek at Bryn Mawr College the following year. From 1943-1946, Lattimore served in the US Navy. After his service, he returned to Bryn Mawr until his retirement in 1971. In 1962, Lattimore translated the "Revelation of John." He also completed translating the New Testament, which was published posthumously in 1996 with the title "The New Testament." Lattimore also wrote and published poems throughout his life. He died February 16, 1984.

Abstract

Richmond Alexander Lattimore (1906-1984), poet and classicist. Dartmouth College Class of 1926. The collection consists of literary and academic papers, including the manuscript and associated materials for "Hanover Poems" (1927) and notebooks containing his own poetry as well as translations of a portion of the "Iliad."
