Biography

Lawrence E. Harvey was born on February 13, 1925 in Denver, Colorado. He graduated from Western Reserve University in 1948, studied at the Sorbonne for a year and in 1951, earned his MA degree from Harvard University. He joined the faculty of Dartmouth College in 1955. During his years at Dartmouth, Harvey masterminded the Foreign Study and Language Study Abroad programs, helped develop the Comparative Literature program, served as Chairman of the Humanities Division, Associate Dean of the Faculty for the Humanities, and finally, in 1970-1971, as Dean of the Faculty. In 1972, he was awarded the Edward Tuck Professorship in French. He retired from Dartmouth in 1981 and died in 1988. Harvey became a close friend of Samuel Beckett when he was researching and preparing a book about Beckett in the 1960s.
