Hoyt, Oliver, 1823-1887

 

Biography

Oliver Hoyt was born on July 24, 1823 in Stamford, Connecticut. He was a member of the Connecticut Senate from 1877 to 1881 and President Pro Tempore of the Connecticut Senate from 1877 to 1879. After leaving the Senate, he returned to run the Hoyt leather merchant business and served as Chairman of Wesleyan College. Hoyt died on May 5, 1887.

Abstract

Letter to former Vice President of the United States Schuyler Colfax concerning Ulysses S. Grant's reception in England on his world tour. Of note is the description of Grant's reception in Newcastle.
