Biography

Harrette Farnham (Spofford) Hovey, the daughter of Farnham and Lydia Coggeshall Spofford, was born in 1834 in Massachusetts. In 1854, she married Charles Edward Hovey, Dartmouth Class of 1852, and was the mother of the poet Richard Hovey,Dartmouth Class of 1885. After Charles Hovey's Civil War service, Harriette moved with her husband and family to Washington, DC, where she worked for the Bureau of Education. She died 1916, and is buried, along with son Richard and her parents, in Andover, Massachusetts.
