Tanis, Gilbert R., 1916-2005
Biography
Gilbert R. Tanis was born in Haledon, NJ on June 1, 1916. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1938, and from Harvard Business School in 1940. In 1951, the Office of Development at Dartmouth College hired him, subsequently he became special assistant to the president in the area of corporate giving in 1957. From 1959 to 1971, he served as executive officer under Dartmouth Presidents John S. Dickey and John G. Kemeny. From 1971 until his retirement in 1981, Tanis was the director of Continuing Education. During that time, he helped found, and then direct, the Dartmouth Institute, which provided continuing education for business executives. In addition to working for Dartmouth College, Tanis was also the class agent for his graduating class, a member of the Hanover Finance Committee, and a trustee of the New England Colleges Fund, The White Mountain School (Littleton, NH), and the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire. He was also a director for the Markem Corporation of Keene, New Hampshire. Tanis died on January 6, 2005.
