Huse writes to his friend "Will" that he has concerns he has been taken at the Siege of Petersburg based on a newspaper account. Huse also discusses life at Dartmouth (including "horning" by the Sophomores), mutual friends, and mentions his forthcoming vote for Abraham Lincoln.

Notification from the Telegraph Operator in White River Junction to Hiram Augustus Huse in Hanover, announcing that Lincoln was shot last night and died this morning. Secretaries Seward and Sumner were both assassinated and their recovery is doubted.
