Biography
John Barker Stearns was born on February 13, 1894, in Norway, Maine. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1916, and received his MA from Princeton in 1917. After Princeton, Stearns entered the United States Army and rose to the rank of lieutenant while serving two years overseas, attached to the French Army as an interpreter. In recognition of his service he received the Croix de Guerre by the French government. In 1920, Stearns became an Instructor in Ancient Languages at Alfred University. He also taught at Princeton University from which received his Ph.D. in 1924. Before joining the faculty of Dartmouth College in 1927, Stearns was an Assistant Professor in the Classics at Yale University. At Dartmouth Stearns became a full Professor of Classical Languages and Literature in 1931, a position he maintained until 1961, when he retired as the Daniel Webster Professor of the Latin Languages and Literature. Stearns was also active on behalf of his Class, holding the position of class secretary and editor of the class newsletter several time. He died on July 14, 1973.
