Biography

Thomas Bewick was born in 1753 in Northumberland, England. He was an English wood-engraver and natural history author. He began as a children's book illustrator but gradually turned to illustrating, writing and publishing his own books, gaining an adult audience for the fine illustrations in "A History of Quadrupeds." Bewick is best known for his "A History of British Birds." He died on November 8, 1828.

Abstract

The letter is addressed to Bessy (Elizabeth) Bewick, Thomas Bewick's daughter. In the letter he urges his daughter to secure a seat on the coach from Southwick to Newcastle and, if need be, to send her boxes to the Wheatsheaf and wait there with them for a ride home.
