Biography

Allen Hazen was born on August 6, 1795 in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont. He entered Dartmouth College with the class of 1817, but left after two years, on account of the weakness of his eyes, and taught for a time in Wheeling, West Virginia. He afterwards went to New Orleans and was there connected with the Custom House.Returning to Hartford, he settled on the farm first owned by his grandfather, Thomas Hazen, 3rd. He represented Hartford in the Legislature in 1845, 1846, and 1849, and filled other offices in the town. Hazen died on June 7, 1871.
