Biography

Ernest Francis Brown was born in Amherst, MA, on December 31, 1903. He received his B.S degree from Dartmouth College in 1925. After Dartmouth, Brown attended Columbia University, earning his A. M degree in 1927 and his Ph. D in history in 1931. While working on his dissertation he served on the Dartmouth faculty from 1926-1929.

Brown was associate editor of "Current History" magazine and later senior editor of "Time" magazine before becoming editor of the "New York Times Book Review" from 1949-1971. In addition to his editorial career, Brown wrote several books. Most notably his biographies of Joseph Hawley, Edmund Niles Huyck, and Henry J. Raymond. Brown was awarded an honorary degree from Dartmouth College in 1952. He died on November 17, 1995 in Brunswick, Me.
