Biography

Ernest Fox Nichols was born in June 1, 1869 at Leavenworth, Kansas. He attended Kansas State Agricultural College and graduated from there in 1888. Nichols did his graduate work at Cornell University from which he graduated with an M.S. in Science in 1893. He was a professor of physics at Colgate University from 1892 to 1898 and at Dartmouth College from 1898 to 1903. He was also professor of experimental physics at Columbia University from 1903 to 1909. He became president of Dartmouth College in 1909, a position he held until 1916 when he began a professorship at Yale University. In 1920, Nichols became director of research in pure science at the Nela Research Laboratories in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1921, he was elected president of the Massachusetts Institute of Techonology. Nichols published numerous scientific papers and build many delicate scientific instruments. He died in 1924.
