Biography

Henry Willis Kinsman was born on March 6, 1803. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1822, after which he read law with Daniel Webster and joined joined Webster in practice in Boston in 1826. He represented the office in the Massachusetts Legislature in 1833, 1834 and 1835. He was a state senator from Essex County and a collector of customs in Newburyport from 1841-1845 and from 1849 to 1853. Kinsman died on December 4, 1859.

Scope and Contents

Letter from Daniel Webster. Webster's defense against charges in the New York and Albany newspapers of fraudulently receiving payment in connection with French spoliations prior to 1800. Webster declares that the statements are entirely false. Webster drafted the letter in the third person since it was to be a signed statement by James H. Causten. Attached to the letter is a note by Causten as well as a note by Henry Willis Kinsman, Webster's legal partner.
