Biography
Elbridge West Merrill was born on May 10, 1846 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He entered Dartmouth College in 1864 and after two years of study, spent one year at a law school in Berlin, Germany. After his return he was admitted to the bar and entered a law office in Springfield, Massachusetts. However, the rest of his life was a series of mishaps and financial disappointments, including an attempt to raise fruit in California. Merrill died on January 19, 1899.
