Biography

William Thayer Smith was born on March 30, 1839 in New York City. He was the son of Dartmouth president Asa Dodge Smith. Thayer Smith received his AB in 1860 and his AM in 1874 from Yale University. In 1879, he received an MD from the Dartmouth Medical School. Thayer Smith joined the faculty of the Dartmouth Medical School in 1883 and became Dean of the School in 1896. He held this position until his death in 1909. Thayer Smith was the first dean to give the name "Dartmouth Medical School" to the organization. He was also the first person to perform a surgery in the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital. In 1897, Dartmouth College awarded him honorary LL. D. degree.
