Biography

John Dwight Willard was born on November 4, 1799 in Lancaster, New Hampshire. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1819, after which he spent two years in Savannah, Georgie for health reasons. In 1822, he became a tutor at Dartmouth College and in 1823 began the study of law. He was admitted to the bar in 1826. Willard began practicing in Troy, New York that same year. In 1831, he became editor of the "Troy Sentinal." From 1834-1840, he was associate judge of the Rensselaer County Court and from 1858-1859, a member of the New York State Senate. Willard died on October 9, 1864.
